Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI): is a cooperative of Huntington religious groups and The Family Service League. HIHI was created to provide shelter with meals to the homeless in Huntington who lack emergency housing during the winter. A different congregation hosts each night of the week. St. Patrick’s Parish hosts Saturday Night/Sunday Morning alternating with at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Centerport.
Donations:
- New clothing, men’s size S or M- socks, underwear, t-shirts, thermal underwear
- Gently used clothing: hats, gloves, scarves; new or gently used work shoes, sneakers, boots pants, sweaters, sweatshirts/pants, short coats
- New travel-sized toiletries (wrapped soap, shampoo, razors, combs, shaving cream, deodorant, toothbrushes/paste, dental floss, facial tissue packs
- Kitchen supplies (plastic ware, paper goods, plastic wrap, Al Foil, ets.)
- Cleaning supplies (plastic gloves, disinfectant wipes, detergent, bleach)
- Also: playing cards, grown-up puzzle books, ESL books
- Time/Presence:
- Prepare meals (small groups to cook and assemble meals at home, then deliver them to site)
- Provide beverages – juice, soda, coffee, tea, milk, etc.
- Serve meals
- Provide fellowship by engaging with guest for the evening
- Evening chaperone
- Overnight chaperone
- Help with Saturday night set up (Teen Volunteers) or Sunday morning cleanups
- Make Sunday morning laundromat runs
