The SVDP conference of the Church of St. Patrick is a group of parishioners who strive to grow
spiritually by offering direct service to those in need.

The hallmark of the SVDP approach is a home visit. A team of Vincentians complete a home
visit to each individual or family who contacts us for assistance. Through these visits
Vincentians establish personal relationships with those in need, not only providing material
assistance such as rent/mortgage payments, car repair invoices, utility bills, clothing or furniture
but also offering friendship, understanding and prayer. The home visit enables us to discover
comprehensive needs and affords a safe place for those we serve to share the story of their
struggle.

Confidentiality is paramount to the mission of the conference. We address the people we serve
as our neighbors and strive to bring the love of Christ to each neighbor we visit. Gifted with the awareness that our blessings should be shared with others, Vincentians are
granted the opportunity to give back and make a difference in our community.

On Saturday, September 24th , the St. Patrick’s Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul participated in the 14th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk.

While most of the 63 parish conferences from Long Island gathered for the “main” walk at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, our conference stayed local for the 2nd year in a row, holding our walk at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception. We were grateful to have a crisp, sunny morning and a strong turnout.

To kickoff this wonderful event, Monsignor Camp celebrated mass in the seminary chapel for us just prior to the walk. This year we raised $14,000, with about 100 walkers participating, many of them teenagers from our religious education program and St. Patrick’s School!

The Friends of the Poor Walk is the only event on Long Island that draws attention to the issue of poverty in our communities and the Society’s only fundraiser within the Parish. Today in our parish, there are families occasionally without food or clothing. There are families facing eviction because they cannot pay their utilities, rent or mortgage. Our conference works in conjunction with Trocaire to meet these needs. We are most grateful to Monsignor Camp for his constant support of our conference. We would also like to thank the Seminary, especially Linda Zollo, the Director of Hospitality, for allowing us to hold the walk on their beautiful grounds. We are already looking forward to next year!

Thank you as well to our generous sponsors: The Townwide Fund, Florence Building Materials, Kean Development, Horseneck Associates and Berjen Metal Industries. Finally, a huge thank you to all of our walk participants, both in-person and virtual for your presence and donations. You all brought hope and support to our local neighbors in need!
